 Headaches in Children/Adolescents: Headache Management

 

At the onset of a moderate or severe headache:

1. Seek rest, initiate relaxation techniques, apply a cold compress to your head

2. For nausea/vomiting________________________________________________

3. For sedation______________________________________________________

4. For pain__________________________________________________________

5. Other instructions___________________________________________________

If the headache is still moderate to severe 2 hours later:

6. Repeat___________________________________________________________

7. Plus:

  • Complete your headache diary.
  • Take all of the medications (listed above in instructions 1 - 7) that your doctor has recommended. If you need to take the medications a second time (after completing instructions 1 - 7) , make sure at least 24 hours have passed since the first time you took these medications. Do not take these recommended medications more than twice a week.
  • If headache lasts longer than 24 hours or neurologic problems appear, call your doctor’s office.

For milder headaches:

Seek rest, initiate relaxation techniques, apply a cold compress to your head

Use______________________________________, but no more than 2 doses per week.

  • Avoid medications containing aspirin and/or caffeine.
  • Call your doctor if your headache increases in frequency or severity or changes in character.
