Why is this drug prescribed?
Topiramate is prescribed to help control the frequency and severity of
partial and grand mal epileptic seizures in adults.
How is topiramate given?
Topiramate comes in the form of a capsule or tablet taken by mouth. Tablets
should be swallowed whole and not broken or crushed, however the capsules may be
swallowed whole or their contents sprinkled on a teaspoonful of soft food such
as applesauce, ice cream, pudding or yogurt. Once sprinkled, topiramate should
be swallowed immediately without chewing. Topiramate can be taken with or
without food however, it should be taken with food if it causes an upset
stomach.
Individual doses vary, and your doctor will tell you how much to take at each
dose. Follow the directions on the prescription label carefully. If there is any
part that you do not understand, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Do not take any
more or less than prescribed and do not take it more often than prescribed. NEVER
stop taking topiramate without first consulting your doctor.
What special precautions should I follow before using this drug?
Before taking topiramate, inform your doctor of any prescription or
over-the-counter medications that you are currently taking; this includes any
herbal medications or dietary supplements that you are taking. Also, be sure to
tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or if you have any other
medical conditions including:
- History of kidney stones
- Kidney disease
- Liver disease
- Glaucoma
What special instructions should I follow while using this drug?
Topiramate can cause blurred or double vision, drowsiness and you should
make certain that you know how this medication affects you before operating a
vehicle or using machines that require you to be alert.
Be sure to drink plenty of fluids while using this medication in order to
prevent the formation of kidney stones.
Oral contraceptives containing estrogen may not work properly while you are
taking topiramate. A different or additional form of birth control should be
used while taking this medication.
Your doctor may want you to carry a medical identification card or bracelet
stating that you are taking this medication.
What are the common side effects?
The most common side effects of carbamazepine include:
- Nausea
- Breast pain in women
- Tremors
- Back pain
- Constipation
- Heartburn
When should I call my doctor?
If you experience any of the following side effects, contact you doctor
immediately:
- Blurred vision
- Double vision
- Eye pain
- Rapidly decreasing vision
- Burning, prickling or stinging sensations
- Increased or ongoing seizures
- Bloody or cloudy urine
- Lack of coordination
What should I do if I forget a dose?
If a dose is missed, simply take it as soon as you remember if it is within
an hour of the scheduled dose. Otherwise simply skip the missed dose and proceed
with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose.
What storage conditions are necessary for this drug?
Topiramate should be kept in its original container, tightly sealed and away
from children. The tablet form should be stored in room temperature, away from
excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom) and out of direct sunlight. Any
medication that is outdated or unused should be thrown away.
